Most Johnson Controls rooftop unit failures don't need an emergency service call. The Triage Sequence That Works
Here's the order I use when a rooftop unit won't start. Not every step fits every Johnson Controls unit, but they're universal enough for most package rooftop units.
- Check the filter. A clogged filter is the #1 cause of no airflow and freezing coils. If it looks like a felt carpet, replace it. A $20 filter is cheaper than a $500 service call.
- Check power. Look at the disconnect switch on the unit and the breaker in the panel. Resetting a tripped breaker has fixed more 'emergencies' than you'd believe.

Why does this matter? Because calling tech support without this information is like telling a mechanic 'car won't go.' You'll get a diagnostic appointment, not a fix.
When to Call Johnson Controls HVAC Tech Support
If the basics check out and the rooftop unit still isn't working, it's time to call support. But before you dial, have these ready:
- Model and serial number from the unit nameplate
- The exact alarm or error text from the controller
- The date of the last maintenance
- The voltage at the unit, if you know how to use a multimeter safely
I went back and forth for an hour before telling a client we needed a technician. The controller said 'High Pressure Lockout.' I reset it, and it tripped again twenty minutes later. Even after I made the call, I kept second-guessing—what if I'd missed a simple breaker? The 45 minutes until the tech arrived were not fun. It turned out to be a bad condenser fan motor. Temporary Fixes That Actually Help
If the repair won't happen for hours, your job is to keep people safe and maybe productive. That's where an infrared heater and a hand fan can help—if you're realistic about what they can do and what they can't.
Infrared heater
An infrared heater is not a replacement for a commercial rooftop unit. It's a holding action. To be clear, I do not recommend an infrared heater as a permanent heat source. A typical 1,500-watt infrared heater draws about 12.5 amps at 120V, so one heater per circuit. No extension cords. No daisy-chaining. Keep at least three feet of clearance from anything combustible. The U.S. Department of Energy (energy.gov) recommends using space heaters only while someone is awake and nearby, with the right clearance.
The thing people forget is that infrared heats objects and people, not just the air. In an emergency, that's actually good. Point it at a desk and the person at that desk feels warmer even if the room is still cold. Not ideal for a warehouse. Perfectly decent for an office lobby.
Hand fan
Summer is the opposite challenge. A high-velocity hand fan won't cool the room, but it makes people feel cooler by moving air across their skin. At 85°F with no A/C, that can buy a couple of hours. For someone working at a desk, it's enough to keep going. For a server room, no. Don't even try.
How to Change the Air Filter in Your Car
You didn't expect a car filter section in an HVAC article, but here we are. If you drive to different job sites, your car's HVAC is part of your daily comfort. And a clogged cabin air filter reduces airflow from the car's A/C and heat just like a clogged rooftop filter does. The good news is that it's one of the easiest DIY fixes on most cars.
- Open the glove box. On most cars, pressing the sides in lets the door drop down.
- Look behind it for a flat rectangular filter cover. Slide the cover off.
- Slide the old cabin filter out. Before you throw it away, note the arrow printed on the frame.
- Slide the new filter in with the arrow pointing the same direction—usually toward the rear of the car or the fan. An upside-down filter means unfiltered air.
- Reinstall the cover and push the glove box back until it clicks.
This takes about five minutes and costs $15–35 for the part, based on a January 2025 price check at major auto parts retailers. A shop charges $75–150 for the same job. That's not because you're cheap; it's because the total cost of doing it yourself is almost zero. That's total cost thinking again.
While you're at it, check the engine air filter too. It's usually in a black plastic box under the hood, held by clips or a screw. But open your owner's manual first. I've pulled a few wrong panels, and one time it was a fuse box.
The Boundary: What Not to Do
This article is about triage, not about becoming your own HVAC contractor. If you've done the basic checks and the unit is locked out, or if you see refrigerant oil, ice on the suction line, or a burnt smell from the control board, call a licensed technician. Rooftop units have capacitors and drives that can hold a lethal charge even when the power is off. Don't test them unless you've been trained.
Also, don't treat an infrared heater or a hand fan as a permanent solution. Buildings need proper ventilation, fresh air, and working equipment. The temporary trick exists to prevent an emergency from becoming a disaster, not to replace the repair. Under ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2022, filtration and ventilation are part of acceptable indoor air quality. A clogged filter isn't just uncomfortable; it's noncompliant.
And one more boundary: changing your car's cabin air filter isn't a substitute for a real HVAC inspection, in the building or in the car. But it is one of those tiny maintenance tasks that prevents a bigger, more expensive problem later. Same as replacing a $20 rooftop filter before it becomes a $2,000 coil repair.
