Johnson Controls Thermostat FAQ: How to Adjust, GLAS Price, Air Filter Direction, and Emergency Heating/Cooling Shortcuts

How do I adjust a Johnson Controls thermostat?

Honest answer: there isn't one universal sequence because Johnson Controls makes basic programmable thermostats and the GLAS smart thermostat. Which way does an air filter go?

The arrow on the filter frame points in the direction of airflow. In most air handlers and furnace-type units, that means the arrow points toward the blower, not toward the return grille. In a ceiling return-air grille, the arrow should point into the duct, toward the air-handling equipment.

A backwards filter caused one of the more unnecessary panic calls I remember. In March 2024, 36 hours before a state inspection, a medical office called because the waiting room wouldn't cool below 76°F. The thermostat setpoint was 70°F, and the previous filter had been installed backwards. Once we flipped the filter so the arrow pointed at the blower, the room reached 70°F in about 40 minutes.

This matters because pleated filters with a MERV rating can collapse when they're installed backwards. Collapsed media reduces airflow and can cause the evaporator coil to ice up. The arrow isn't decoration.

Should a backpack leaf blower be in an HVAC maintenance kit?

Yes, for outdoor condenser coils. I keep a backpack leaf blower on my truck, and it saves more time than most specialized tools I own. It clears leaves, seed fluff, and dirt from air-cooled chiller coils and rooftop condensers without using water.

Use it safely:

  1. Lock out and disconnect power before cleaning.
  2. Blow from the clean side toward the dirty side whenever you can reach it. That pushes debris out instead of packing it into the fins.
  3. Wear eye protection and hearing protection.
  4. Prefer an electric blower around buildings so you aren't adding exhaust near intakes.

One caution from my first year on the job: don't substitute a pressure washer for this task unless the manufacturer says it's okay. I bent a set of condenser fins with a pressure washer and the repair cost more than a dozen leaf blowers.

Can I use an infrared heater as an emergency heat source?

Yes for temporary spot heat. No for replacing a heat pump, furnace, or chiller-heater system. An infrared heater is radiant heat; it warms objects and people in its path, not the whole volume of air. It works for a mechanical room, pump house, or loading dock while you wait for a part. It won't satisfy a building's heating load in cold weather.

There is also a control trap: an infrared heater placed near a thermostat can heat the thermostat's sensor before the room feels warmer. The thermostat stops calling for heat and the rest of the zone gets colder. If you use one during an emergency, keep it away from thermostats and treat it as a stopgap, not a permanent solution.

Why is my Johnson Controls thermostat ignoring my temperature change?

Before you call for a new control board, check the three reasons I see most often:

  • Schedule control. The display may show Occupied, Unoccupied, or a clock with an override timer.
  • Setpoint limits. Many Johnson Controls thermostats allow facility managers to set a minimum cooling setpoint and a maximum heating setpoint. If it won't go below 74°F, that limit is usually locked and must be changed from the installer menu.
  • Airflow. A dirty or backwards filter can freeze a coil and make the room behave as if the thermostat is broken. The thermostat keeps asking for cooling; the system just can't deliver it.
